Martin Brundle claims Lando Norris Miami GP victory more ‘nuanced’ than safety car luck
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Lando Norris stormed to his first victory in F1 at the star-studded Miami GP. However, after the memorable victory, experts and teams lamented his win by deeming it to be a stroke of luck because of the Miami safety car. This led F1’s renowned reporter, Martin Brundle , to enter the discussion and stand by the McLaren driver for his valiant effort.

Before the race in Miami, fans had anticipated the weekend to be a whitewash by Max Verstappen, who has been on a dominant run since the start of the 2024 season. However, they were met with a surprise on the race day as Lando Norris benefitted from the new set of upgrades on his MCL38, which excelled him up the field. Along with the fortunate timing of the safety car caused by Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant‘s crash.

This, in turn, led experts to comment that Norris won due to the safety car and not on merit.

It's easy to say that the safety car on lap 28 was lucky for them, but it's more nuanced than that. Once past [Perez], Norris had tremendous pace with his upgraded McLaren, as did his team-mate Oscar Piastri in the sister car which had some of the new parts, and who was running in second place and keeping [Max] Verstappen well in sight and both Ferrari's behind initially. Martin Brundle via his reaction, has sided with the 24-year-old and claimed that the Brit was the fastest on track in the clean air. Moreover, he stated that McLaren‘s upgrades were working as expected in Miami and Norris could have even challenged for the win on raw pace.

Lando Norris claims that he is hungry for more victories

Norris had been on the verge of winning races multiple times before and was predicted to be a race winner soon. Moreover, with his wait coming to an end in Miami, this has started a fire inside him to continue his winning run in the upcoming races.

After winning the 57-lap Miami GP, the McLaren driver expressed his hunger to win more races.

I’ve, of course, had my moments where we’ve been close, and I’ve never been able to convert it into the win, but I wasn’t worried. As much as a lot of people doubted that I was going to be able to put it together and win a race, I wasn’t worried. It would have been a lot less likely that I won today without these upgrades and without the hard work that they’ve been putting into everything, so I would like to say it’s the start, and now I’m already hungry for more. Lando Norris said in an interview with F1

As mentioned earlier, Norris had been utterly close to winning a race before in his career and was destined to be a Grand Prix winner. But when this dream was fulfilled, he was on cloud nine and claimed that he wanted to experience the same dopamine rush again by continuing his winning run in F1.

Despite this, it is expected that normality would dawn again on the paddock in the next race at Imola. Moreover, Ferrari is also reported to have planned to bring upgrades to the race. Keeping everything in view, round seven of the ongoing campaign could prove to be a highly entertaining watch.
