NFL Exec Believes Packers Should Wait On Jordan Love Contract
Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin / USA TODAY NETWORK

Entering the 2023 NFL season, no one knew what to expect from the Green Bay Packers. After trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, most thought that the proud franchise would enter a long rebuilding process. Many thought that new starting quarterback Jordan Love would end up being a flop.

After a slow start to the season that saw Love struggle mightily, some media members even suggested that Love should be replaced as the team’s starting quarterback.

What no one knew at that point in time was that Love would not only figure things out, but that he would end the season on a stretch that placed him among the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Now, the Packers have a decision to make. They could work out a new contract for Love that would pay him big money long-term and keep him in town. Or, they could wait awhile to see if Love can keep playing at the level that he finished the season.

It’s a hard decision to make. Doing a new deal with Love now would likely be cheaper in the long run. But, if they were to give him a new deal before the season and Love were to falter in his second season as the starter, it could end up being a massive mistake.

Former NFL Executive Speaks Out On Green Bay Packers’ Future With Jordan Love

One former NFL executive spoke to NFL Analysis Network about the situation and thinks that the Packers should hold off on paying Love the big bucks until he proves himself a bit more.

“I do think that Jordan Love is going to be the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers for a long time. However, I’ve seen players have big seasons, get paid, and then fall off. When it comes to Love and the kind of money that the Packers would have to pay him, I think waiting would be wise.”

Nothing is a guarantee in the NFL. That includes the impressive streak that Love went on last season.

Throughout the course of the 2023 season, Love ended up completing 64.2 percent of his pass attempts for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also picked up four touchdowns on the ground. In addition to his statistics, he led the Packers to the playoffs and orchestrated a blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round of the postseason.

While the future is very exciting for Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers, no one should react quickly to one good year. Even if it costs them a bit more money, the Packers should wait to see how Love starts the 2024 season. If it goes well, they should throw Love whatever it takes to lock him up long-term.

It will be interesting to see what the Packers look like this season. They are starting to receive a lot of hype and are no longer in the underdog role that they thrived in during the 2023 season. All eyes will be on Love to see if he lives up to the star talk that he has been receiving all offseason long.
